Agreement to strengthen American customs in the fight against illicit trade

-

La Regional Vice-Presidency of the World Customs Organization for the Americas and the Caribbeane (OMA Americaribe) signed this Thursday (12.08.2021) a cooperation agreement with the international non-profit organization Crime Stoppers, in order to strengthen administrations against illicit trade.

Through the execution of technical assistance, the main objective is to "administratively establish mechanisms to implement and promote actions, workshops, meetings and seminars related to strengthening the capacities of WCO Americaribe member countries to combat illicit trade”, says the statement.

Crime Stoppers is expected to make available to customs a whistleblower channel to receive information on customs fraud and smuggling, trade-based money laundering and transnational criminal organizations linked to illicit trade.

In addition, the joint initiative will “monitor information related to activities related to customs fraud and smuggling within the national regulatory frameworks in force in member countries, as well as the Crime Stoppers guidelines for the Caribbean, Bermuda and Latin America.”

The document, signed by WCO Vice President for the Americas and the Caribbean, Werner Ovale, and Alejo Campos, Regional Director of Crime Stoppers for the Caribbean, Bermuda and Latin America, is a new initiative to boost the potential for cooperation and regional synergy in the fight against organized crime.
