The National Director of Customs and officials of the United States Department of Homeland Security agreed on Monday (07.08.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX) to move forward on an information exchange agreement for the control of drug trafficking in the maritime sphere, as well as intellectual property crimes, official sources reported.
The National Director of Customs, Mr. Jaime Borgiani; the Manager of Control and Risk Management, Jorge Marenales; the trainer of the UNODC-OMA Container Control Program in charge for Latin America, César Schiaffino; and officials from the Department of Homeland Security, David Villegas, Daniel Siazon and Julieta Wober, participated in the meeting.
El National Director of Customs, Mr. Jaime Borgiani, he said: "In terms of container control, the Port of Montevideo is very busy, which is why it is essential to have advance information." He added that there is always a need for technical equipment and training.
He explained that, based on the definition of a logistics port, it receives a lot of traffic from the region; what comes through the Hydroway is one of the most important activities today.
In this regard, Borgiani commented: “We have had good results, it is never enough.” He stressed that the fight against smuggling and intellectual property crimes “is a State policy.”
In this context, he reiterated the importance of information exchange and stressed the importance of training, especially in areas such as image analysis and container profiling.
According to the Customs statement, the participants in the meeting agreed to implement the possibilities of mutual collaboration, especially in the exchange of information, and to continue to advance in the various issues related to controls and anticipation of events with cargo at the maritime level.
