Uruguay: Access channel to the port of Montevideo to be increased by 14 meters

-

The River Plate Administrative Commission (CARU) has authorized the deepening of the access channel to the port of Montevideo to 14 meters, announced the Minister of Transport, Víctor Rossi, this Monday (4.6.2018).

According to release of the Presidency, the official points out that "it will allow the entry of the largest draft ships in the world."

"The deepening of the access channel to the port of Montevideo, approved last week by the Administrative Commission of the River Plate, will allow us to receive the largest draft ships in the world," Rossi stressed at a press conference held today. The canal will be deepened to 14 meters and extended to kilometer 54.

The initiative is included in the 2018-2035 Master Plan coordinated by the National Port Administration (ANP), which is still being developed. This plan, developed with contributions from the private sector, will establish the strategic lines of port activity for the coming years.

Rossi explained that, in parallel, Argentina promoted the construction of a new canal called Magdalena, to divert cargo from the port of Buenos Aires through its own canal. In this regard, he explained that the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry established the conditions for its authorization.

He also pointed out that it was agreed that both delegations would maintain the navigability conditions of the Canal del Indio between the two ports.
