UNCTAD, the United Nations agency dedicated to promoting a place for developing countries in international trade, was established in 1964.
60 years after its creation, UNCTAD will celebrate a “World Leaders Forum” in Geneva, starting today (12.06.2024), in order to forge a new way forward in the face of a turbulent trading environment reflecting economic crises and geopolitical tensions, as well as climate challenges, as announced by the organization led by Rebeca Grynspan.
Opened by UN Secretary General António Guterres, the event will address the theme: "Charting a new course for development in a changing world".
Over three days, heads of state, civil society and the private sector, as well as some of the world's leading economists, will meet to discuss approaches to address the challenges of sustainable development and enhance the role and impact of UNCTAD.
It is important to remember that UNCTAD is the acronym for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the name given to it once it was decided to turn it into a specialized organization of the United Nations given the magnitude of the problems identified at an international conference and the need for an entity dedicated to finding solutions to them. According to the announced changes, the organization will simply be called "United Nations Trade and DevelopmentThe name change also includes a new logo.
The event will place particular emphasis on the needs of developing countries, as well as island states and landlocked developing countries.
All sessions will be broadcast live on A TV.
