Second meeting of the Central American Customs Committee ends with progress

The second meeting of the Central American Customs Committee ended this Thursday (26.10.2023), in El Salvador, with progress in the Work Plan approved for this semester of 2023, which is aimed at generating favorable conditions for the facilitation of trade.

Accompanied by SIECA, the Customs Directors of the countries that make up the region (El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama) learned about the progress of the reports given by the following groups:

  • Technical Regulatory Group
  • IT Technical Group
  • Customs Risk Management Technical Group
  • Authorized Economic Operator Technical Group
  • Ad Hoc Group on Regional Dispatch Times
  • Ad Hoc Group on Customs Modernization

According to the SIECA, this body also dealt with other issues important matters in customs matters. Namely:

  • Ratification of El Salvador to the International Convention on Simplification and Harmonization of Customs Procedures (WCO), Revised Kyoto Convention.
  • Implementation of the Central American Digital Trade Platform.
  • Validation of the update of the Central American Trade Facilitation and Competitiveness Strategy-

Werner Ovalle, Guatemalan Customs Superintendent, admitted: "It was a very fruitful meeting with the Customs Directors of the Central American region."

According to Ovalle, it was important to emphasize the joint work of the Customs to position the region in an updated context.

"...we continue to strengthen coordination and communication mechanisms focused on greater trade facilitation and customs controls through risk management and capacity building," he concluded at the end of the meeting.
