As part of its extensive work agenda within the framework of the Third Global Origin Conference of the World Customs Organization (OMA) held in Santiago, the Secretary General of the OMA, Kunio Mikuriya, has met with government and parliamentary authorities since his arrival in Chile this week.
The first meeting was with the National Director of Customs, Alejandra Arriaza, who welcomed him and detailed the main challenges that the institution faces throughout the country and how the role of the supervisory service has been strengthened for the control of foreign trade and the protection of borders and citizens.
The procession then moved to the National Congress in Valparaíso where Mikuriya was received by the President of the Senate, Juan Antonio Coloma. He was also accompanied at the meeting by the Deputy Director of Tariffs and Trade Affairs of the WCO, Gael Grooby, the Technical Deputy Director of Customs, Gabriela Landeros, and the Head of the Department of International Affairs of Customs, Andrea Ortiz.
In a conversation with the country's second-highest authority, they discussed the future of Customs in the next decade, with special emphasis on the use of intelligence in customs work and how this is reflected in the work of the Chilean Legislative Branch.

Continuing with the protocol activities, this Thursday (09.11.2023) Kunio Mikuriya and Alejandra Arriaza were with the Minister of Finance, Mario Marcel. At Teatinos 120, crucial issues related to the challenges of customs were addressed, highlighting the need to strengthen these institutions and promote the use of technologies, the digitalization of processes, single windows - such as the Integrated Foreign Trade System (SICEX) - and interoperability between national and international agencies to combat smuggling and ensure adequate tax collection. In addition, the role of Chilean Customs in organizing the Third Global Origin Conference was praised.

Finally, the Secretary General of the WCO and his delegation met with the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations, Claudia Sanhueza, to discuss relevant issues in the customs field in the context of international treaties. Mikuriya particularly praised Chile's leadership in international agreements, highlighting the valuable experience shared by Chilean Customs during the ongoing conference in Santiago on the future of Rules of Origin.

During the two days of the Third Global Origin Conference of the WCO, Kunio Mikuriya has also spoken with many of the 400 Customs delegates from around the world and representatives of the private and academic sphere who arrived in Chile, including the Director General of Customs and Taxes of Congo, Bernard Kabese Musang, and the National Director of Customs of Uruguay, Jaime Borgiani.
