-

The General Directors of the Customs that participate in the Negotiation of the Regional Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) of Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) Programs of the Americas, held a virtual meeting on November 25, reported the National Customs Directorate of Uruguay.

During this meeting, the general status of the Regional ARM was presented from its origins, the status of the activities carried out since the beginning of the pandemic was reviewed, and the current progress was evaluated. In addition, a work schedule was presented to complete the stage of joint validations and establish commitments and instructions for the next activities to be developed by the AEO technical teams of each customs administration.

Through the virtual platform, the highest Customs authorities and representatives of ten countries that make up the Regional OAS Project participated: Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala (Regional Vice President of the World Customs Organization), Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay.

The statement said that “the directors agreed on the importance of this major regional initiative for trade facilitation and for the recognition of the AEO figure in the region.” It also stated that this initiative of the Americas was recognized as “the world precedent of twelve customs administrations that are carrying out work and efforts to recognize their AEO programs as compatible in order to grant reciprocal benefits to their trusted companies.”

It should be noted that this dynamic demonstrates the efforts of customs administrations to achieve common criteria and standards that will allow for the establishment of regional recognition of the World Customs Organization's AEO program, widely recognized as a key factor for a solid customs-business partnership; a secure, transparent and predictable trading environment; and, in a broader context, greater economic prosperity.Statement from the DNA of Uruguay)
