Common Market Group meetings anticipate the MERCOSUR Summit in Montevideo

-

Montevideo becomes today and tomorrow the focus of South American diplomacy with the celebration of the LXV Ordinary Meeting of the Common Market Council (CMC) and the expected Summit of Heads of State of MERCOSUR and Associated States, events that mark the closing of the Pro Tempore Presidency of Uruguay (PPTU).

In this context, the LXIII Extraordinary Meeting of the Common Market Group (GMC), held in the MERCOSUR Building, concluded this Wednesday (04.12.2024). For two days, the delegations of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay worked on an extensive agenda of strategic issues to strengthen regional integration.

According to MERCOSUR, Uruguay, represented by Ambassador Alejandro Mernies, led the discussions. The other delegations were headed by Rodrigo Bardoneschi (Argentina), Delia Pinto (Bolivia), Gisela Figueiredo Padovan (Brazil) and Patricia Frutos (Paraguay).

The agenda of these meetings highlights the bloc's commitment to regional challenges, anticipating crucial debates at the presidential summit.

Issues

The GMC representatives addressed key issues to strengthen regional integration, such as the economic and trade agenda, with emphasis on tariff and regulatory aspects and the promotion of key sectors such as micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and intellectual property. They also analyzed progress in the bloc's external relations, both at the regional and extraregional levels.

The PPTU's assessment highlighted the progress achieved in areas such as the work of the MERCOSUR Trade Commission (CCM) and the technical groups and subgroups that depend on the GMC. The XIII Business Forum was also highlighted, where the "Implications of Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for International Trade" was discussed.

Another key point was the analysis of projects linked to the Fund for Structural Convergence of MERCOSUR (FOCEM), which seeks to reduce asymmetries in the region, and the progress reported by the Economic and Social Consultative Forum (FCES), a space that encourages the participation of the private sector and civil society in the integration process.

The GMC acknowledged the work carried out by the Commission of Permanent Representatives of MERCOSUR (CRPM) and its contribution in areas such as the MERCOSUR Training Platform, the Communication Policy and the evaluation of the productivity of the work forums. Uruguayan ambassador Enrique Ribeiro presented a detailed report on these achievements, highlighting their impact on the consolidation of the bloc.

The role of the GMC

As the executive body of MERCOSUR, the GMC plays a central role in the implementation of resolutions and is composed of representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Economy and Central Banks of the Member States. Extraordinary meetings such as this one reinforce its commitment to a solid and dynamic integration in an increasingly challenging global context.

With these preparatory meetings, Mercosur is heading towards a new stage in its integration process, while expectations are growing regarding the conclusions that will emerge at the Montevideo Summit.
