The National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) of Peru conducted a successful training of the Regional Customs Laboratory of the World Customs Organization (WCO) on March 25 and 26, 2021, the technical body reported.
The virtual meeting of the Analytical Center of Customs of South America was held under the slogan "Extraction and analysis of samples of metalliferous mineral concentrates"and brought together more than one hundred chemical professionals from nineteen countries in the region.
The opening was in charge of Deputy Secretary General of the WCO, Ricardo Treviño, and the Regional Vice President of the Americas and the Caribbean, Werner Ovalle, who highlighted the Importance of customs laboratoriess for the correct tariff classification and protection of society. In addition, in the words of Ricardo Treviño: “Currently, customs laboratories play a leading role in the Detection of fake vaccines".
Through scientific and technical analysis, these establishments determine the characteristics, nature, origin and uses of the goods, to protect consumers from imports of potentially harmful or dangerous goods and prevent illegal practices in international trade.
In that line, the Director of Tariff and Trade Affairs at the WCO, Konstantinos Kaiopoulos, highlighted the importance of strengthening customs laboratories in terms of their analytical capacity.
It should be noted that the Central Laboratory of Peru follows international analytical guidelines and standards and is a "WCO Regional Customs Laboratory" under a Memorandum of Cooperation.
In this regard, the Deputy Superintendent of Customs of the country, Marilú Llerena, highlighted this recognition obtained at the last meeting of the WCO Council, in December 2020.
“One of its virtues is sharing the best experiences at a regional and global level,” concluded the Deputy Superintendent.
