Paraguay: Customs revenues fell 9% in September

-

Customs revenues at the end of September totaled 838.382 billion guaraníes (120 million dollars), the amount collected was -9,0% below the revenue of 921.783 billion guaraníes recorded in the same period but in 2019.

However, it is ranked second in terms of box office earnings since the start of the pandemic.

In this way, in the top 10 collections, customs resources in September 2020 are ranked as the fourth best historical collection for the month of September recorded in the last nine years, observing a year-on-year decrease of -9,0%.

In cumulative terms, customs revenues reached 6.893 billion guaraníes (about 1.028 billion dollars), thus the amount collected was -11,7% below the cumulative revenue of 7.805 billion guaraníes recorded in September of last year.

This accumulated decrease in terms of customs duties coincides with the behavior recorded by the monthly indicator of economic activity (Imaep) which accumulated a variation of -0,3%, and with the business figures estimator (ECN) which marked a cumulative decrease of -1,6%, so that this phenomenon of contraction occurs in all economic areas, not being alien to the levels of customs collection.

Therefore, the accumulated decrease in customs revenues is mainly explained by the low collections recorded in 4 of the main categories, which together represent 45,0% of the total accumulated collection, and whereThe sharpest reductions have been observed in the areas of vehicles, information technology and telecommunications, spare parts (auto parts), and petroleum derivatives.

In the vehicle sector, the same had a share of 10,7% and a considerable decrease of -20,4%, representing a loss equivalent to 28 million dollars; followed by the information technology and telecommunications sector with a share of 5,7% and a strong decrease of -31,8% (being the most affected sector given its high dependence on transactions made by tourists at the border, which are closed), representing a loss equivalent to 27 million dollars.

Likewise, the spare parts sector, with a 4,7% share and a decrease of -10,0%, recorded a loss of 5 million dollars, and finally the fuel and other petroleum derivatives sector, with a 24,0% share in the collection and a decrease of -0,2%, represented a loss equivalent to 426 thousand dollars. Therefore, a total loss of 61 million dollars (about 410 billion guaraníes) has been recorded.
