The World Trade Organization confirmed on Wednesday (23.02.2022) that the Twelfth Ministerial Conference (CM12) will take place during the week of June 13 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the General Council of the Organization following the easing of restrictions imposed in Switzerland, the host country, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
CM12 was due to take place from 30 November to 3 December 2021, but was postponed due to the outbreak of the Omicron variant, which led to the imposition of travel restrictions and quarantine requirements in Switzerland and many other European countries.
El Ambassador Dacio Castillo of Honduras, President of the General Council, said today that setting the dates for the long-awaited meeting should boost the work of the WTO and focus the discussion on the ministerial outcomes. The exact dates of the meeting will be defined later, he said.
The Ministerial Conference, attended by trade ministers and other senior officials from the organization's 164 members, is the highest decision-making body of the WTO. It should be noted that in this international organization, authority is not delegated to a board of directors or to the chief executive. Thus, the WTO belongs to its members. For this reason, countries make their decisions through various councils and committees made up of all members. And the most important body is the Ministerial Conference, which must meet at least once every two years.
