-

A round of dialogue between the World Customs Organization (WCO) and 18 countries of the Americas and the Caribbean region (AMERICARIBE) held on September 28 and 29 concluded with important progress towards defining the WCO Strategic Plan 2022-2025.

The meeting was co-chaired by the Deputy Secretary General of the WCO, Ricardo Treviño Chapa, and the VVice President for the AMERICARIBE region and Customs Superintendent of Guatemala, Werner Ovalle, according to a statement posted on Twitter by the Vice Presidency of AMERICARIBE

In his introductory remarks, the Deputy Secretary-General stressed to those present that it was of utmost importance to strengthen Members' participation.

In turn, the Vice President of the AMERICARIBE region highlighted “the consultative approach adopted by the Deputy Secretariat, which allows for the inclusion of regional priorities and needs within the WCO Strategic Planning.” In addition, Ovalle thanked “the incorporation of the Spanish language to facilitate discussions,” the statement says.

During the discussions, delegates addressed the current structure of the strategic plan, Key performance indicators and regional priorities, which mention capacity building, e-commerce, information exchange, Revised Kyoto Convention, coordinated border and security management, among other matters.

The official information highlighted that “the methodology used provided strategic opinions for the performance of the WCO and its future projection, demonstrating that the process of consultation and participation of Members is a good practice to work focused on the same objectives and priorities.” Also, Susana Jacobsen, representative of the European Union, presented to the attendees an initiative to modernize the WCO.

It should be noted that the WCO Secretariat, by organizing these regional meetings, is fulfilling its obligations in terms of transparency, ensuring that the views of its Members are incorporated into the Strategic Plan for 2022-2025, after being discussed at the upcoming meetings of the Political Commission and the Council of the Organization.
