The World Customs Organization (WCO) announced on Friday (30.06.2023) that version 4 of the Data Model (DM v4) is available on the WCO website. This is an initiative to simplify and standardize data requirements for cross-border regulatory entities, including Customs.
In version 4 of the Data Model, users are positioned at the forefront of technological advances, benefiting from significant improvements.
In this regard, the WCO reported that one of the outstanding features of version 4 of the MD is the application of a free interactive website which gives users the ability to easily view, search and compare data elements without the need to navigate through multiple platforms. In addition, the app provides access to guidance materials and other national information packages, which drastically reduces the time which involves performing key implementation tasks, such as mappings.
As a tool for communicating information, the data integrity in the OMA MD is categorical as it improves quality by resolving redundancies and inconsistencies. Simplified structures and building blocks are also provided, which condenses the learning curve and makes the new version (MD v4) more user-friendly. Easier to use and to understand and implement.
Version 4 is built to enable users to implement the WCO Data Model in a modern technological environment by leveraging the latest electronic message formats and exchange protocols with support for the JSON message format and open API, according to the Organization.
The WCO Data Model version 1.0 was published in 2002. Subsequent versions 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 expanded the scope of the instrument.
