New version of the WCO data model is available interactively and free of charge

-

In order to reach the entire international trade community, the World Customs Organization (WCO) has launched the new version 3.11.0 of the Data Model in interactive mode free of charge.

The update of this universal language that provides a semantic model for the harmonized exchange of cross-border regulatory processes incorporates the changes requested by Members and introduces Two new Messaging Implementation Guides (MIG) to implement the Compendium of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as well as the joint messaging standards of the WCO and the Universal Postal Union.

The two guides provide practical guidance and additional technical information useful for the implementation of the Data Model, in addition to the semantic definitions available in the Base Information Packages (BIP) and/or Derived Information Packages (DIP).

The International Maritime Organization's Implementation Guide includes technical information for carrying out the formalities for ship notification described in the Convention, with the purpose of facilitating international maritime traffic (FAL Convention). It is the result of joint efforts by the WCO and the IMO to update the IMO Compendium on Facilitation and Electronic Commerce.

Regarding both added Message Implementation Guides, the Universal Postal Union contains technical information related to the primary electronic message formats, namely: CUSITM, a message for a postal operator to transmit information about mail shipment to its local customs authority, and CUSRES, a message to reply to a CUSITM message.

New in version 3.11.0 of the OMA Data Model is the launch in a application. This application improves the user experience and helps to navigate more easily through different data objects such as classes, data elements, and information models.

The WCO announced the free access the application for all interested parties, including members, international partner organizations and private sector stakeholders. “All those interested in accessing the WCO Data Model will be able to take advantage of the application after accepting the terms and conditions of use,” he clarified.

To use the tool, the application can be accessed at http://datamodel.wcoomd.org.

The WCO further explained that the initiative seeks to open up new possibilities for economic operators to incorporate the Data Model into their commercial operations, so that they can align data elements of their commercial documents: invoice, packing list or bill of lading, and especially those relevant to cross-border procedures.

Furthermore, it is noted that such alignment will allow for a fluid flow of information along the different steps in supply chain processes; a reuse of available data by various parts of the supply chain, in particular regulatory agencies; tracking and tracing; access to supply chain data from multiple sources; and finally, “increased predictability and quality of data,” the WCO concludes.WCO Press Release)
