On March 28 and 29, Argentina and Uruguay held a bilateral meeting in the city of Fray Bentos where they discussed the evaluation of the implementation status of the common Integrated Control Areas: Salto/Concordia, Paysandú/Colón and Fray Bentos/Gualeguaychú.
The meeting, which was attended by representatives of the control agencies of both countries and other departmental authorities, was held in order to improve territorial connectivity within the framework of the activities of the Technical Subcommittee on Border Controls and Operations of Technical Committee No. 2 “Customs Affairs and Trade Facilitation” of MERCOSUR, sAccording to a statement from Uruguayan Customs.
These types of meetings have been held regularly and, according to Customs, “this was the first face-to-face bilateral meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared.”
There, the Coordinating Body for the Argentine Republic reported on the Integrated Control Areas Reform Project based in Concordia (Entre Ríos Province), which will cover infrastructure and connectivity in TVF/Tourism and Cargo and equipment for load control and security, whose completion is estimated for March 2024.
Meanwhile, the National Directorate of Border Crossings of Uruguay reported on the Tender for the reform of Integrated Control Areas based in Fray Bentos (Department of Rio Negro), which will include improvements to infrastructure, parking and circulation areas, signage, among others.
The dialogue set aside a space for receiving the concerns of the private sector of transporters and Customs brokers from both countries.
According to official information, the parties referred to the information survey carried out during 2022 at the different border points of MERCOSUR, with the aim of having an updated report on the situation in the Integrated Control Areas, as well as the assistance that will be received from the World Bank and the bidding process carried out for its completion in the coming months.
