The European Union will take action following the United States' decision to apply a 25% tariff on imports of steel and aluminum Europeans, according to a statement from the European Commission released today (12.03.2025). The measure is considered detrimental to trade, businesses, and consumers. In light of this, the measure is as follows:
EU response
- Reactivation of previous measuresStarting April 1, the EU will reinstate tariffs imposed in 2018 and 2020 on US products.
- New measuresBy mid-April, the EU will impose new tariffs on US products equivalent to the damage caused by the US measure, up to €26.000 billion.
La President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, regretted the US decision and stated that "Tariffs negatively affect economies and consumerss». The EU remains open to dialogue, but will act to protect its businesses and workers.
Next steps
The restoration of preliminary measures will come into force on April 1. The european commission will consult Member States and stakeholders until 26 March before approving the new measures, which will be implemented in mid-April.
In 2018 and 2020, the US imposed tariffs on European steel and aluminum, prompting the EU to respond with rebalancing measures. Although the EU partially suspended these measures in 2021 to negotiate with the US, the announcement of new tariffs on February 10, 2025, has prompted Brussels to react with renewed trade retaliation.Communication)
