The World Customs Organization (WCO) today (16.11.2020/XNUMX/XNUMX) highlighted Honduras' efforts to achieve trade facilitation, a fundamental initiative for the competitiveness, growth and development of countries.

According to the statement from the Vice Presidency of the Americas and the Caribbean, the Customs Administration of the Central American country has been gradually modernizing and orienting its control and oversight functions toward this new paradigm.

The Executive Director of Customs, Juan José Vides, praised many of the tasks carried out by the Service and its officials, highlighting “the continuous transformation, with the aim of becoming a world-class, modern and agile customs office that contributes to the logistical development and increased competitiveness of the country.”

Regarding the achievements Most significantly, Vides mentioned some pillars of success in his management at the head of the Customs Administration:

  • Compliance with the Collection. To achieve this, the service has innovated by implementing a Payment Plan module in the automated revenue system of Honduras (SARAH), which facilitates voluntary and material compliance by taxpayers.
  • Trade facilitationThe Customs Administration has implemented a Central American Trade Facilitation Strategy to improve the efficiency and quality of the customs service, in line with international standards. This involved the development of a robust technological infrastructure: state-of-the-art tools were put into operation, using information systems.
  • Security and controlThe Customs Service, through its team, is working on improving risk management to make controls and security of clearances more efficient through non-intrusive technologies. In addition, a significant reduction in import and export time was achieved.
  • InstitutionalizationThe service has qualified personnel and cutting-edge technology to meet the guidelines of a World Class Customs.

Furthermore, the specialist in Customs Franchising and Tax Inspection emphasized the professionalization and constant training of his collaborators, whose efficiency has not stopped, even in the midst of the global pandemic.

Regarding the implementation of the Central American Customs Union, the Executive Director highlighted the satisfactory experience of Honduras and Guatemala in facilitating trade, by both nations, in the midst of the pandemic.

“It was an unforgettable and invaluable experience,” said the head of the country’s Customs, appointed by the WCO. He added: “We must overcome the challenges of how to jointly improve security and control at the borders, exchange information and thus reduce risks in the region.”
