The Chief Negotiators of Mercosur and Singapore held a virtual meeting this Thursday (07.07.2022) in order to prepare the VI round of negotiations with a view to a trade agreement between both parties.
The statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay indicated that the meeting is scheduled for the week of july 11 of this year, in the city of Asunción.
The Republic of Paraguay, in its capacity as Mercosur coordinator for this negotiation, led the talks with Singapore.
The Paraguayan delegation included representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Industry and Commerce, Agriculture and the National Directorate of Intellectual Property.
The Singapore delegation was led by its chief negotiator, Francis Chong.
The coordinators of the sectoral chapters that will make up the future Agreement reported on the status of each discipline.
The next round will require the work of three groups: Services, Investments and Institutions, while the remaining outstanding issues will be defined by the chief negotiators.
In this regard, the delegations welcomed the efforts made to reach the final stage of negotiations.
Reaching an agreement with Singapore will allow Mercosur to "start negotiations with an Asian country" that is also a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
