Guatemala: Customs Director Steps Down to Become Deputy Minister of Anti-Narcotics

Guatemalan Customs Superintendent Werner Ovalle has left his post to join the Central American country's new government as Deputy Minister for Anti-Narcotics. 

Werner Ovalle announced his resignation as Director of the Guatemalan Customs Office through a statement released this Monday (15.01.2024/XNUMX/XNUMX) on his social network X. 

"Today, after more than 8 years at SAT, I am closing a cycle in my life, serving my country from the Customs Office," said the official. 

"I would like to thank the Directors, Superintendents, Intendants, Managers and all the SAT staff, especially the customs personnel and all the actors in the foreign trade logistics chain, since through joint work we managed to increase revenue, facilitate foreign trade, increase controls and highly trained personnel, making customs modern, transparent and automated," he continued.

"It was hard work but very positive at the national, regional and international level, convinced that the SAT plays a fundamental and strategic role in ensuring that the State has the necessary resources, and thus the institutions fulfill their operational plans according to their functions and strategies for the benefit of our country," said the official.

And he concluded: "With feeling, confidence and conviction, I say goodbye saying: Mission accomplished!"

A graduate in Legal and Social Sciences with 3 Masters in Politics, Public Security and Integration and Development, and with extensive experience in the SAT, Ovalle remained as head of Customs, a strategic agency of Guatemala, since March 31, 2016; he was Vice President of the World Customs Organization from July 2020 to June 2022 y Pro Tempore President of the Central American Customs Committee in the second half of 2021 and 2022.

According to official sources, Werner Ovalle will occupy the position of Vice Minister of Anti-Narcotics in the new government of Guatemala. 

At this time, Ovalle has not been replaced by any official, SAT confirmed.
