The Government regulates the new import quota for electric vehicles with reduction and elimination of tariffs

-

The Ministry of Industry regulated the new import quota for electric vehicles with reduction and elimination of tariffs, through Resolution 610/2021.

The regulation, published this Tuesday (29.09.2021/XNUMX/XNUMX) in the Official Gazette, established that terminal companies based and with production in the country and importing representatives of terminals not based in the country, interested in importing hybrid, electric and fuel cell (hydrogen) motor vehicles, must submit the application to the Automotive Policy Directorate of the Undersecretariat of Industry.

In this application, each company will report the total number of units and models that it needs to import, without detailing the quantities that correspond to each of the models included in the presentation.

Since mid-September and until mid-March 2023, the Government renewed the reduction, in some cases, and the elimination, in others, of tariffs on the import of electric cars through decree 617/2021.

The regulation set the maximum limit of units that can actually be imported during the extension period of the measure at 4.500.

It also established that of the established limit, 4.275 units will be assigned to terminal companies based and producing in Argentina, while the remaining 225 will be awarded to importing representatives of terminals not based in the country.

The new resolution indicated that the quota distribution will be carried out on a quarterly basis, and specified that for the first quarter all applications made up to 10 calendar days after today will be considered.

While for the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth quarters, submissions made up to 30 calendar days prior to the start of each period will be considered.

The total quota will be distributed equally between the six quarters and the remaining quota not used per period will be accumulated for allocation in the following period.

In May 2017, through decree 331, reduced rates of the Extra-Zone Import Duty (DIE) of 5%, 2% and 0% were established for the importation of certain hybrid, electric and fuel cell (hydrogen) automobiles, complete, both assembled and semi-disassembled and totally disassembled, for a period of 36 months.

At the beginning of November 2020, through decree 846/2020, the Government renewed the benefit until May of this year, and set the import quota for the period at 1.000 units.

Once the regime expired, the Association of Automotive Manufacturers (Adefa) requested an extension of the deadline and the authorized amounts, and in the middle of last month, the Government agreed to the request, renewing it until March 2023.
