Argentina: International Olive Council begins its sessions

Within the framework of the Argentine presidency of the International Olive Council (IOC) for 2018, this global organization began its sessions on Monday (18.6.2018). The meetings will continue until Thursday, June 21, with the aim of identifying the opportunities and challenges of the olive oil and table olive sector, and defining joint policies to move forward into the future.

Throughout the week, the meetings are chaired by Argentina, with the participation of officials and technical teams from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agroindustry. 

Global appointment

With the presence of the 14 countries members of the organization and observer countries, the meeting represents the highest global event for the olive oil and table olives sector. 

The IOC covers the 98% of the countries producers and the 71% of the countries consumers, counting among its members Argentina, Algeria, Egypt, the European Union, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Turkey and Uruguay, among others.

Themes

Over the next few days there will be meetings of the IOC Technical Committees on issues financial, economic, chemical, technological and environmental. Decisions will be sought that contribute to achieving the general objectives of the Organization on the promotion of production, trade and consumption of olive oil products.

Context 
The sessions take place in a context overall growth in production, consumption and international trade in the sector. According to IOC data, for the 2017/18 campaign, world production is expected to be 25% higher than the previous cycle of 2016/2017, while for the same period, global consumption and exports are expected to increase by 8% and 26% respectively.

To level national, Argentina is actively working to position itself as one of the new players in global olive growing outside the Mediterranean. This is reflected in the fact that our country is the leading producer and exporter of olive oil products in America and the fifth largest exporter of olive oil in the world after the EU, Tunisia, Syria and Turkey. This performance is also marked by an estimated increase in external sales of olive oil of 116% in the 2017/18 period compared to the previous campaign.

Olive growing in Argentina

Our country is the 5th world exporter in olives table, and the 7th global producer; and in olive oil It ranks 6th in exports and 10th as a producer.

Currently there 90 thousand hectares in production distributed in Buenos Aires, Catamarca, Córdoba, La Rioja, Mendoza, Río Negro, San Juan, and with new expansion projects in the provinces of Neuquén, Salta and San Luis.

In the foreign market more than 110 companies In 2017, national exporters sold olive products worth more than USD 220 million to more than 30 destinations.

Olive growing in America

The week will conclude on Friday, June 22 with a International Seminar of the Olive Sector, jointly organized by the Argentine Government and the IOC, which will be attended at its opening by the Minister of Agroindustry, Luis Miguel Etchevehere.

In this way, different topics related to the value chain with the presence of national and international experts: situation and prospects of the olive oil and table olive sector in the world and in the American continent; olive oil and health; marketing and sales trends for olive products; and sensory analysis of virgin olive oil and laboratory network.

They will join the international seminar two rounds of business with importers from the major sales destinations for our products, which will take place in the City of Buenos Aires and La Rioja.
