Chile will host the Regional Meeting of the Working Group of the Network of Frontline Officers for Latin America and the Caribbean (FLO-LATAM), organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which will take place in 2025, it was announced this Tuesday (07.05.2024) in a statement.
According to the text, the Chilean National Customs Service has already begun to work on the preparation of the important meeting together with institutions and with Representatives of Cuba, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Brazil.
The institution explained that Mirza Mohamed, Scientific Secretary of the IAEA and in charge of the Regional Network of Frontline Officers for Latin America and the Caribbean (FLO-LATAM), led a series of preparatory meetings virtually from Vienna (Europe), where the headquarters of this organization is located.

He also highlighted that the rest of the team met at the National Customs Directorate, located in Valparaiso (Chile). The participants of this meeting were: the Head of International Relations of the Cuban Customs and President of the FLO-LATAM Network, Ernesto Azcuy; the Vice President of the FLO-LATAM Network and professional of the Chilean Customs, Constanza Bucarey; of the Customs Police of Costa Rica, Angie Calderón; of the Air Force of Uruguay, Héctor Ferrer; and of the Federal Police of Brazil, Carlos Faria.
Nuclear security in the region
“The implementation of this activity is part of the ongoing work of Customs in the area of Security, related to the control of Weapons of Mass Destruction and dual-use goods, particularly in the area of control of radiological and nuclear material, considering compliance with national regulations and existing international commitments. In this area, the IAEA considers our country - Chile - as a fundamental axis for the implementation of a nuclear security architecture in the region,” explained the IAEA. Deputy Director of Customs Enforcement, José Luis Castro.
The preparatory meetings held at the end of April also included a field visit to the Logistics Support Extension Zone (ZEAL) with a team of inspectors from the Valparaíso Regional Customs Office.
The objectives of the Regional Meeting of the IAEA Frontline Officers Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (FLO-LATAM) Working Group include: sharing experiences in nuclear security detection and architecture operations; making presentations on detection and challenges in the sustainability of Materials Out of Regulatory Control (MORC); and advancing the establishment of cooperation mechanisms in the region.
