Chilean President Sebastián Piñera announced on Friday (22.3.2019) the start of a new bloc of South American nations called the Forum for the Progress of South America (PROSUR) to coordinate countries in a “flexible, lightweight, inexpensive structure, with clear operating rules and an agile decision-making mechanism that allows South America to move forward.”
The integration space will address priority issues in infrastructure, energy, health, defense, security and combating crime, prevention and management of natural disasters.
At the end of a summit in Santiago, the leaders of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru signed a declaration expressing its commitment to regional integration.
According to the document, Chile will lead the initiative in its first stages for 12 months and Paraguay will later preside over the bloc.
