As of January 1, 2022, the changes contained in the Seventh (VII) Recommendation of Amendment to the Harmonized System (HS), approved by the World Customs Organization (WCO), come into effect, which apply to more than 150 nations that are part of the HS Convention. In this framework, the Central American countries held a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Economic Integration (COMIECO) on Thursday (22.07.2021) where the Seventh (VII) Recommendation of Amendment to the Harmonized System (HS), approved by the World Customs Organization (WCO), came into effect. Resolution to adopt the VII Amendment to the HS on the Designation and Coding of Goods in the Central American Import Tariff (ACI), SIECA reported.
The HS update incorporates several changes, such as technological advances, statistical reasons and other international trade requirements, with an emphasis on health and safety. This comprehensive review is carried out every 5 years in response to technological developments and import or export controls, among others.
Through a statement, SIECA stated that "during the meeting of the COMIECO also presented the work plan for the second half of 2021 which will be led by Guatemala, in his capacity as Pro Tempore President of COMIECO.”
The technical and administrative body stated that the following people participated in the COMIECO meeting: Roberto Antonio Malouf, Minister of Guatemala and Pro Tempore President of COMIECO; Andrés Valenciano, Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica; María Luisa Hayem, Minister of Economy of El Salvador; María Antonia Rivera, Presidential Designee and Minister in Charge of the Secretariat of Economic Development of Honduras; Orlando Solórzano, Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce of Nicaragua; Omar Montilla, Vice Minister of Domestic Trade of Panama; and Francisco A. Lima Mena, Secretary General of the Secretariat of Central American Economic Integration (SIECA).
COMIECO is mandated to establish economic integration policies for the region, which translate into plans, actions and projects, and is made up of the ministries responsible for trade and integration policy of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.SIECA Press Release)
