Training to strengthen container control in Latin America and the Caribbean

The top representatives of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) provided a Virtual course on the Global Container Control Program for 75 customs agents from 13 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The training was developed from October 19th to 23th, with the aim of strengthening customs capabilities to prevent drug trafficking and smuggling in the region.

The training program had the Financial support from the European Union and Germany, according to information from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

The training consisted of providing international legal instruments and principles relating to information sources, risk analysis and profiling techniques to detect illicit trade in agrochemicals, cargo inspection, tobacco smuggling and others. It also covered intellectual property rights, information exchange mechanisms, intelligence and trade facilitation.

UNODC, together with the World Customs Organization, established the Container Control Programme with the aim of Purpose of helping governments create effective container inspections to prevent drug trafficking and smuggling.

In addition, this Program fulfills other functions: it facilitates cooperation between states and international organizations involved in regulating container traffic against crime, and maintains strategic alliances within countries with operational ports, with security bodies, including Customs, the Police, institutions related to the maritime sector and the private sector.
