WTO trade barometer falls to 98,7 points

-

The World Trade Organization (WTO) reported today (21.02.2022) that the Goods Barometer measurement fell to 98,7 points, below the reference value of 100 and a slight decline from last November's reading (99,5).

"Supply disruptions have slowed the rebound in merchandise trade, but the situation may begin to change as pressures on the supply chain begin to ease," the organization said in the statement.

The relaxation of health measures, once it has been proven that cases linked to Omicron are generally mild, will help to boost trade in the coming years, said the WTO, although it made this possibility conditional on the fact that no new variants of the virus emerge.

Most of the six components of the barometer were close to the 100-point threshold, which indicates expansion, except for automobile exports, which stood at 92 points, and the level of maritime transport, at 97,2, given the current situation of persistent port congestion.

The breakdown of the other sub-indexes shows that export orders scored 99,9 points, air freight traffic 101,7, trade in electronic components 98,6 and raw materials 101,6. (WTO Press Release)
