The Chilean National Customs Service began a new cycle this Friday (19.08.2022/135/XNUMX) with the appointment of Alejandra Arriaza as Director. She is the first woman to occupy the position, after having accessed it through a competition carried out by the Senior Public Management (ADP) system of the Civil Service, where there were XNUMX applicants.
The new workday and installation of the Director was marked by greeting all Customs officials through an exciting video conference where she gave her greetings, she also received the affection of officials from Arica to Punta Arenas, in addition to a tour of some of the Service's offices in Valparaíso.

"I received my professional training in this Service, so I return with that affection, with that hug, with the joy of knowing that we are going to work on a challenge that, of course, is personal, but I hope to convince you that it is also your challenge: making our Service always better, that we do not go backwards, that we move forward on the issues that we have to put first on the agenda", she explained in her first words as National Director of Customs.
He added that "People come first, that all the changes we have to make are with the officials, we are going to work hard. The times are going very fast and a lot is expected of us, therefore my particular challenge is that we work together, that they accompany me in this task, that they put the love that they put into it every day and that they also have joy… we are doing it because our country needs it and We have to be the Customs that Chile requires for development and for what is to come. There are many expectations, I want to meet them, but not alone, but with you, who are my great team.".
Alejandra Arriaza highlighted: “I know that It is a symbol that she is the first woman I have been in this position since the Customs Office was established, that is, since the Royal Customs House when the first customs tax was collected. That is true, it is a symbol and for me it is a source of pride, but it is also a an achievement in a world where it has been difficult to put gender above other decisions… I am not here to mark this milestone only, because now comes the work ahead and I believe that it is not necessary to demonstrate. I am already in this position and I am the new director and I hope that soon we will not have to talk about gender focus, because it will not be necessary, it will only happen on a day-to-day basis, and that It is also the hope that I bring".

The new National Director of Customs is Originally from Valparaiso e Civil Industrial Engineer from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso (PUCV) and Master in Public ManagementThe new Director came to the service in 1998 as a professional in the Studies Department, taking on various professional challenges that allowed her to advance within the institution.
On 2001 ands named as Head of the Department of Studies, where he deepened his knowledge of Customs and periodically linked up with Regional Directorates and Administrations throughout Chile.
Later in the year 2006, is designated as Director of the Metropolitan Regional Customs Office, thus consolidating a career as a civil servant that led her to assume the leadership of one of the most important Customs offices in the country. After developing this important management, she was appointed as Technical Deputy Director of Customs in 2011.
Following the Senior Public Management competition process, the list of eligible candidates was sent, from which President Gabriel Boric decided to appoint Alejandra Arriaza as the new and first National Director of Customs, a decision that is also part of the Government's policy of tending towards gender parity in the election of public offices.
