Argentina and Colombia promote convergence of Mercosur and Pacific Alliance

-

Argentine President Mauricio Macri and his Colombian counterpart Iván Duque agreed in Buenos Aires on the need to promote convergence between Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance.

The leaders stressed the intention of both countries to contribute to integrating Mercosur with the Pacific Alliance.

"We believe in the importance of continuing to advance in the convergence of Mercosur with the Pacific Alliance, which are an important bridge that we have to strengthen between the two strong blocks of the region", Macri emphasized to reporters at the Government House.

Speaking to the press after Mauricio Macri, Duque agreed with Macri regarding the need to foster greater ties between the two blocs.

«The Pacific Alliance and Mercosur must strengthen their relations. This will be a topic that we will bring to the Pacific Alliance meeting and summit soon.", he pointed.

Mercosur, made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, is currently negotiating trade agreements with the European Union, the European Free Trade Association (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), as well as with Canada, Singapore and the Republic of Korea.

The AP, meanwhile, is a mechanism made up of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, which together have a population of 225 million people, represent 37 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Latin America and the Caribbean, and attract 45 percent of the region's foreign direct investment.

The next AP summit will take place on July 5 in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
