Argentina suspends exports of poultry products due to a case of bird flu

-

The National Service of Health and Agri-Food Quality (Senasa) confirmed this Tuesday (28.02.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX) the contagion of Avian flu on a broiler chicken farm in the province of Río Negro (northern Patagonia), which is why it automatically cancelled the export of such products in compliance with international standards.

Despite the measure, the Senasa statement clarified that “poultry production for the domestic market will continue since the disease is not transmitted by the consumption of chicken meat and eggs.” It added that establishments that usually export their poultry will be able to sell their production locally.

"The positive case comes from a broiler chicken establishment located in the town of Mainque, province of Río Negro, South of the Patagonian zoophytosanitary barrier, in an area of low poultry density", detailed the official text.

For this reason, Senasa decided to carry out the Containment measures corresponding, established in the Avian Influenza Contingency Manual, in order to prevent the spread of the disease to other establishments producing birds destined for the commercial circuit.

“Authorities, professionals and technicians from Senasa are already working to achieve the prompt restoration of the country's disease-free status and the resumption of poultry exports,” the agency stressed.

Additionally, the Government will officially report the events to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OMSA), in line with international standards.

The situation is worrying. The National Government had reinforced surveillance actions and  had made official “extraordinary sanitary measures” to mitigate the risk of spread of the virus by Avian Influenza.
