The Secretary of International Economic Relations, Jorge Neme, raised on Thursday (09.09.2021) Argentina's interest in redoubling efforts with Japan to consolidate a greater interrelationship that allows for facilitating and diversifying bilateral trade, adding value, incorporating new technologies and new investments.
This was expressed today when participating in the 6th Meeting of the Dialogue for Trade and Investment Relations between the Argentine Republic and Japan, which was developed under a mixed in-person and virtual format.
“In a post-Covid 19 world, the main challenge we face is for trade and investment to continue and increase. Thus, Argentina and Japan, as strategic partners, must redouble their efforts to consolidate greater interrelationship,” said the Argentine Foreign Ministry official.
This process of greater interrelation "between businessmen from both countries will facilitate and diversify bilateral trade, add value, incorporate new technologies and make new investments," said Neme.
This bilateral dialogue mechanism was established in 2016, in order to create a space for Japanese companies with a presence in Argentina to exchange opinions and concerns of interest to them and to communicate their future plans.
At the same time, it allows national authorities to present the most relevant aspects of the bilateral agenda in terms of trade and investments, as well as to update on the development policies that the Government is carrying out, with a view to resuming a path of growth with social inclusion.
The meeting allowed for the review of a broad bilateral agenda, focused on various sectors of commercial interest, investment and technological cooperation.
The meeting highlighted issues related to "the opening of markets for products of interest and export promotion policies, with a view to boosting the flow of bilateral trade."
In addition to promoting trade that "is below its potential," the opportunity to advance in "actions that could be developed jointly in order to stimulate reciprocal investments; the situation of strategic sectors with potential for the development of new businesses" was highlighted.
At the meeting, the opportunities presented by sectors such as renewable energy, especially in the areas of hydrogen, ammonia and carbon recycling, and mining with projects such as the manufacture of lithium batteries; and the search for new market niches that expand trade between the two countries, among others.
The meeting was co-chaired by Neme and the Secretary of Industry, Knowledge Economy and Foreign Trade Management of the Ministry of Productive Development, Ariel Esteban Schale, on behalf of Argentina, and the Japanese ambassador to Argentina, Mr. Nakamae Takahiro.
The Undersecretary for Multilateral and Bilateral Economic Negotiations, Carola Ramón, and the Argentine ambassador to Japan, Guillermo Hunt, also participated in the meeting.
