Argentina achieved a trade surplus of 1.623 billion dollars in May

Argentina's trade balance in May recorded a trade balance of $1.623 million, an 21,6% less The National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) reported this Tuesday (2020) that in the same month of 22.06.2021, the trade balance had registered a surplus of 1.470 billion dollars in April.

El new report highlights that the Exports totaled USD 6.764 million, which represented a year-on-year increase of 33,2%, while the Imports reached USD 5.141 million, with an increase of 62,4% above the level of the same month in 2020.

The Exports rose mainly due to a 35,9% increase in prices, as the amounts fell by 1,9 percent. According to INDEC, at the level of items: Exports of manufactured goods of industrial origin (MOI) increased by 117,7%; fuels and energy (CyE), by 45,5%; and manufactured goods of agricultural origin (MOA), by 34,7%; while primary products (PP) registered a decrease of 2,1%.

The sales with more increases were soybean oil (US$281 million); vehicles for transporting goods (US$258 million); flour and pellets from the extraction of soybean oil (US$231 million); biodiesel and its mixtures (US$173 million); wheat and meslin (US$117 million); corn grain (US$92 million), among others. On the other hand, exports of soybeans excluding sowing fell (US$273 million less); lemons (US$55 million less), among other declines.

Imports rose as a result of a 40,7% increase in quantities and a 15,3% increase in prices. All economic uses The following registered positive variations: capital goods (BK), 39,5%; intermediate goods (BI), 58,7%; fuels and lubricants (CyL), 170,7%; parts and accessories for capital goods (PyA), 99,8%; consumer goods (BC), 11,4%; passenger motor vehicles (VA), 121,0%; and the rest, 155,0%, mainly due to the increase in goods shipped through postal services (couriers), clarified INDEC.

Regarding imported products, in this period Increases in diesel purchases (US$166 million) were highlighted; soybeans excluded for planting (US$143 million) and liquefied natural gas (US$105 million).

Main destinations

The main destinations for Argentine exports were: Brazil, China, United States, Chile, India, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Egypt, Indonesia, and Iran, in that order, where they went to 58,0% of total external sales. Meanwhile, the top ten countries of origin of imports were: Brazil, China, United States, Paraguay, Germany, India, Thailand, Mexico, Vietnam and Italy, and represented 70,5% of total foreign purchases.
