APEC: United States presents priorities for 2023

With the aim of strengthening the recovery and resilience of the 21 economies of the countries bordering the Pacific Ocean, the United States presented the priorities of its 2023 agenda for when it hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, better known by its acronym in English, APEC.

This was announced by APEC in a statement released on Tuesday (13.12.2022) in which it stressed that such priorities were announced at an informal preparatory meeting of Senior Officials in Honolulu, capital of the state of Hawaii.

Under the theme «Creating a resilient and sustainable future for all«The United States emphasized its commitment to advancing work on key issues such as supply chain resilience, digital trade, connectivity, opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses, climate change, and environmental sustainability.

Issues related to food security, health, anti-corruption, digitalization, women's economic empowerment and support for historically underserved and underrepresented communities will also be high on the agenda, building on the three priorities emphasizing interconnectedness, innovation and inclusion.

“APEC is where we advance economic policies in the Asia-Pacific region to pursue free, fair and open trade and investment to promote inclusive and sustainable growth,” he said. Chair of the 2023 APEC Senior Officials Meeting, Mike Pyle.

“The theme and priorities reflect what we have heard from member economies and stakeholders to advance a practical economic policy agenda that benefits workers, businesses and families across our economies,” he added.

In that line, Matt Murray, senior US official, he said: “We were struck by the interest and fusion of points of view in the region regarding sustainability and inclusion.” Therefore, he added that the United States will continue to advance on this front and will demonstrate some of the best practices it has in this area.

“It is encouraging to hear how the APEC 2023 vision aligns with our previous work and initiatives, with the aim of continuing progress and driving new initiatives that will further connect the region, support innovation and ensure inclusion,” he concluded. To this end, APEC officials will meet in the following cities in the United States during 2023: Palm Springs (east of Los Angeles) in February for the first meeting and Detroit (Michigan) in May for the Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade and other related meetings. The final preparatory meeting will take place in Seattle (Washington) in September. Finally, the APEC Economic Leaders Week will be held in San Francisco (California) in November 2023.

The economies that make up APEC, founded in 1989, are: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, South Korea, USA, Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
