U.S. Customs and international business alliance sign joint statement to improve supply chain security

-

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Global Business Alliance for Secure Trade Organization (OMB) They communicated On Tuesday (27.04.2021) the signing of a declaration to improve supply chain security.

In the commitment, the organizations emphasized the implementation of a nine-point action plan, including: enhanced information sharing; joint training and outreach on supply chain security; recognition of the Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT, in English) for OMB-certified supply chain partners who successfully complete a CBP validation process; and the creation of new public-private committees to oversee supply chain security and maritime-port security efforts.

“Over the past quarter century, CBP and OMB have worked together to secure global supply chains while facilitating legal trade,” said the CBP Deputy Commissioner Robert E. Pérez“Today’s joint statement will take that partnership to the next level, strengthening our mutual efforts to ensure sound supply chain security practices, promote a level playing field for legitimate businesses, and protect consumer health and safety,” he explained.

In his statements, Fermín Cuza, International President of the WBO, said: “We believe that today’s joint initiative will help institutionalize our 25-year working relationship and expand our cooperation efforts internationally, beyond Latin America and the Caribbean, to include new and evolving threats to the global supply chain.” He stressed that the increasing size and complexity of global supply chains presents challenges for customs agencies and the trading community.

In that sense, “CBP and OMB recognize that vigorous cooperation between the public and private sectors is essential to foster a global supply chain that can withstand evolving threats, such as trafficking in narcotics, counterfeit goods and dual-use technologies,” the Tuesday statement said.
