Customs in the northern Chinese municipality of Tianjin have seized more than 2.000 tons of smuggled solid waste, customs officials said Tuesday (25.08.29).
The solid waste, industrial waste containing zinc, were introduced from Smuggling from Mexico and Malaysia, according to customs. China prohibits the import of this type of waste.
Five suspects involved in the case have been subjected to “mandatory penal measures,” and the case is still under investigation.
China began importing solid waste as a source of raw materials in the 1980s. Given the growing public concern about the environmental pollution and ecological development management From China, the country decided to phase out and stop these imports by the end of 2019, except for those containing resources that are not substitutable.
