The Administrative Commission of the Chile-Uruguay Free Trade Agreement met for the first time this Wednesday (24.07.2019) at the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry to analyze the possibilities of increasing the exchange of services, reported the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rodolfo Nin Novoa, at the launch of the activity "Towards a Month of Dialogues", within the framework of the trade agreement between both countries in force since December 2018.
This agreement is an instrument for incorporating chapters on gender, e-commerce, services, cooperation and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Nin added that business talks began two months ago in Santiago de Chile and are aimed at exporting services., since the goods are tax-free through the Economic Complementation Agreement with the Latin American Integration Association (Aladi).
“There are many expectations, because the economic actors of both countries are willing to exchange ideas to increase trade. The economies are quite complementary, and Chile has a very large opening with market diversification with tariff preferences different from Uruguay's,” he said.
The Uruguayan foreign minister stressed that, within the framework of Aladi and the Pacific Alliance, it is possible to enhance conditions for trade of, for example, the textile industry. "There may be complementarity between Uruguayan wool and Chilean hair, such as vicuña," he added.
"Chile's trade opening is an important milestone with Uruguay, since it is the first agreement in the world that incorporates gender issues," said Rodrigo Yáñez, Undersecretary of International Economic Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile.
