-

The Governments of Brazil and Uruguay announced on Friday (24.07.2020) the creation of the Binational Technical Commission that will allow the border cities of Santana do Livramento and Rivera to monitor of COVID-19 cases as a health unit.

This was announced at a press conference in Montevideo by the Uruguayan Minister of Health, Daniel Salinas, the Uruguayan Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo and the Brazilian ambassador to Uruguay, Antonio Simoes.

Salina explained that this agreement is added to the list of measures taken by the Uruguayan government to prevent the spread of the pandemic, such as epidemiological tracing, swabbing and the request for a certificate of negative results from people entering the country.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian diplomat considered that "in a moment of crisis like this, a compromise was achieved "very important agreement for the border population."

«The creation of a binational serological unit is a historic event"We had a city with two flags and we have a great example of solidarity between brotherly peoples," said Simoes.

In his opinion, the fact that the unit is available to both countries will lead to a reduction in outbreaks.

Bustillo, for his part, reinforced the ideas expressed by the ambassador and stated that this agreement was achieved thanks to "the solidarity of two sister countries."

"When we talk about integration, there is nothing more alive than a border city," he said in relation to the characteristics of cities considered binational.

The news of this agreement had been announced by the president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, during a visit to Rivera, a department to which he traveled in May in the context of an outbreak that left dozens of people infected.
