The director of Customs of Uruguay, Jaime Borgiani, described this Friday (27.12.2019) the seizure of four thousand 417 kilograms of cocaine as the largest in the country's history.
Borgiani assured in a press conference that this amount corresponds only to the content of Three open containers out of four detected and controlled in the Port of Montevideo, with a preliminary estimated value of billion dollars.
The operation was carried out jointly by the National Customs Directorate and the National Naval Prefecture.
The company responsible for the export is dedicated to the marketing of soybeans and is located on the country's coast.. Customs had been carrying out a prudent investigation into the aforementioned firm, monitoring the export of its merchandise. Borgiani assured that the company was testing the movements of Customs in previous shipments, to corroborate the institutional action.
The National Director admitted that The drugs were loaded in Uruguay, he said, indicating that the containers arrived at the Port of Montevideo with the seals corresponding placed by the exporter in the vicinity of Nueva Palmira.
Borgiani stated that “you don’t mess with Uruguayan Customs” and that as a result of this incident – and previous ones – measures have been taken to ensure that this phenomenon does not happen again.
The official indicated that Customs is prepared and has “as a priority the fight against drug trafficking.”
