The other key site is the Estancia Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados or La Calera de los Jesuitas, located 160 kilometers from Montevideo, founded in 1746 by these missionaries of the Catholic Church. The estancia was one of the first centers of organized agricultural, livestock and industrial production that took place in the south-central part of the country.
