In New Zealand, Uruguay submitted its application to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership

-

In New Zealand, the Government of Uruguay submitted its application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Wednesday (30.11.2022).

Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo handed the document over to New Zealand's Minister for Trade and Export Growth and Head of Primary Industries, Damien O'Connor.

According to the official statement, the shared interests of the two countries were particularly highlighted.
both countries, particularly in the agricultural and livestock areas.

In addition, the authorities particularly highlighted the joint positions of both countries in multilateral spheres, in this sense, they agreed on the importance of re-launching the
bilateral link.

Following the delivery of the document for Uruguay to join the CPTPP, there was an exchange of views on the procedure to be followed for the purposes of considering such request for membership in the bloc, which is currently formed by several countries of the Pacific Basin: Australia, New Zealand, Brunei, Chile, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

On the eve of this, the Mercosur partners (Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay) had an additional reaction and warned in a joint note of possible legal and commercial measures if Uruguay insists on joining the CPTPP.

This is an interpretation of Mercosur regulations that prevents members of the bloc from holding unilateral trade negotiations.

The measure comes just days before the Summit of Heads of State of Mercosur member and associate countries, which will be held on December 6 in Montevideo, during which Argentina will assume the Pro Tempore Presidency of Mercosur.
