The Uruguayan armed forces will be responsible for carrying out surveillance tasks in border areas, in order to prevent threats and detect any irregularities or illicit activities.
The Uruguayan government has authorized the participation of its Armed Forces in these tasks, local media reported on Monday (15.01.2018).
The military will be able to carry out patrols and control tasks in collaboration with other agencies such as the Ministry of the Interior or the National Customs Directorate, but they will not be able to act directly in any of the circumstances.
Furthermore, the aforementioned missions may only be carried out in border areas, excluding urban centres.

The Armed Forces will therefore carry out surveillance tasks in support of the agencies with jurisdiction and competence, in order to 'preserve the sovereignty and independence of the country' and prevent threats that affect the integrity of the territory.
