In a tight vote with 86 votes in favor, 65 against and 8 abstentions, the national plenary of the Frente Amplio (FA) resolved to support the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Uruguay and Chile, which was signed in October 2016.

According to the FA statement, which approval happened in a tight vote with 86 votes in favor, 65 against and 8 abstentions, and urged the ruling party to approve it in parliament.

The coalition bodies, especially the National Government Group, were also entrusted with "monitoring the evolution and implementation of the agreements"with the aim of prosecuting them "in a Frente Amplio key."

In this regard, the pro-government deputy José Carlos Mahía told Efe that in order to reach this resolution and manage to change what seemed to be a negative position of the political force towards the FTA, "the attitude of many sectors with a vocation for government" was very important.

He also noted that the Executive's additional information was key because it provided the necessary elements for a favorable resolution.

Although the date for the vote has not yet been set, Mahía believes that the FTA can be ratified "shortly."
