Through a decree, the Government of Uruguay created a commission to demarcate and delimit the islands of Timoteo Domínguez and Martín García, in the Río de la Plata.
"We aspire to a joint development of Martín García and Timoteo Domínguez, which incorporates the historical and cultural heritage as a framework for a relevant tourist space," said the president of the Río de la Plata Administrative Commission (CARP), Felipe Michelini, according to the statement.
The working group will be comprised of a delegate from the Directorate of International Law Affairs, who will chair it, one from the General Directorate of the Area for Border, Limit and Maritime Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, two members of the Ministry of National Defense (Military Geographic Service and Oceanography, Hydrography and Meteorology Service of the National Navy) and a representative of the CARP.
Dry border with Argentina
In order to collaborate and assist in the delimitation and demarcation of our dry border with Argentina between the Martín García islands, under Argentine sovereignty, and the adjacent Timoteo Domínguez, under Uruguayan jurisdiction, the Eastern country has worked.
"We are making a significant effort and we hope that, in compliance with these instructions, we can soon submit to both foreign ministries the organized field work, so that, in the corresponding areas of both national states, progress can be made in delimiting both islands," the official added.
About the island of Timothy Dominguez
Timoteo Dominguez Island was first sighted in the late 1960s.It is uninhabited, has an area of approximately 200 hectares and was formed by the dragging of sediments from the Paraná River, which ended up joining it to Martín García and becoming the only dry border between the two countries.
The development of this territory is currently limited., because it does not have the legal security to do so. “We aspire to a joint development with Martín García, which incorporates the historical and cultural heritage as a framework for a relevant tourist space,” said Michelini.
The binational commission is committed to optimizing the symbolic value, historical and cultural, which is located at the headquarters of the organization, which is located on Martín García Island. With this premise, the CARP promoted a meeting on March 21, 2017, which it described as historic, in which the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Transport and Tourism, as well as the embassies of both countries, participated.
