Uruguay began controls on imports of products containing mercury

-

The Government of Uruguay through the National Customs Directorate began the importation of mercury lamps and tubes, according to the decree 15 / 2019

According to article 17 of the measure, published on January 23, 2019, it provides the regulations for the proper management of products containing mercury and their waste, and a period of six months is established from its publication to begin import control.

In that sense, dSince last July 23rd, Only natural or legal persons with a post-consumer collection plan, approved or in the process of approval, may import, manufacture, assemble or assemble the articles permitted by said decree, when the annual production exceeds 200 units.

The articles covered by the regulations that enter Uruguay (compact and linear fluorescent lamps, high-pressure mercury vapor lamps, cold cathode fluorescent lamps, external electrode fluorescent lamps, high discharge lamps, thermometers and devices for measuring blood pressure) may not exceed the maximum mercury contents established in the Minamata Convention that Uruguay approved with the Law No. 19.267, of September 12, 2014 in order to protect human health and the environment from mercury emissions and releases.

The Minamata Convention is named after the Japanese town of Minamata, where in the 50s the population was poisoned by eating fish and shellfish contaminated with mercury, caused by discharges from the petrochemical company Chisso, which caused the death of hundreds of people and caused neurological damage to many others.
