Uruguay: Customs donates seized clothing to institutions

The National Customs Directorate (DNA) of Uruguay carried out a Donation of more than 12 thousand items of clothing to the city of Rivera (north).

It was about counterfeit merchandise seized in 2012 as a result of Operation Caronte in that city, in addition, in two containers in the Port of Montevideo.

Smuggling route 

These products were brought in Containers from China arrived at the Port of Montevideo and left in transit to Sao Paulo, Brazil. Although the route stipulated that it should leave through the Brazilian city of Rio Branco, it was transported to Rio Branco.

Shell company

On the other hand, the Barcelona company that appeared in the documents did not exist, which is why these products were adulterated and falsified.

Intervention of Justice

Following the DGA procedure, the people were sentenced to prison for repeated crimes of Smuggling and Criminal Association. They were two customs agents, a shipping agent, a transport agent, a customs officer from the Port of Montevideo, the driver of the truck that was carrying the merchandise, a police officer from the Montevideo Police Headquarters, the person in charge of the warehouse in the city of Rivera, two customs officers from Río Branco and an official from the Ministry of Transport and Public Works. 

Destination of seizure

The containers were appraised in more than 5 million dollars. While the Justice ordered the destruction of more than 72 thousand pairs of glasses of different brands and the donation Approximately 12 thousand items of clothing were donated to institutions such as the Nursing Home in the city of Rivera, the Cerro Carancho Departmental Prison, the Vida Nueva Baptist Church, the Christian Youth Association, Mides and the NGO “Become Addicted to Life.”
