European Union gives final green light to mandate to negotiate relations with the United Kingdom

-

The European Affairs Ministers of the Union European (UE) definitively approved this Tuesday (25.02.2020) the mandate to negotiate the future relationship of the community club with the United Kingdom after Brexit, so that the talks could begin in March, community sources told EFE.

The ministers adopted the mandate at the start of the General Affairs Council meeting taking place this morning in Brussels, the sources said.

On Monday, the ambassadors of the countries of the UE They have already given the green light to the mandate for the European Commission to negotiate with the United Kingdom and approval by the ministers was a purely formal procedure.

Diplomats from the 27 member states of the bloc were due to approve the document on Wednesday, but failed to reach a consensus on areas such as equal conditions in the future trade relationship, which the Commission and EU countries consider key to the relationship with the United Kingdom once it is no longer subject to EU rules.

European sources then indicated that the ambassadors wanted to "polish" that aspect of the negotiating mandate.

In the draft document launched by the European Commission, Brussels offered the United Kingdom a "highly ambitious" trade agreement without tariffs or quotas for all goods entering the single market and stressed the need to maintain a level playing field between the two parties.

After the departure of United Kingdom of the UE On 31 January, a transitional period of eleven months began, until 31 December, during which EU legislation will continue to apply in British territory and during which the future relationship between the two parties will be negotiated.
