UNCTAD calls for maintaining maritime trade in the face of COVID-19

-

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on Wednesday (25.03.2020) called on governments to keep maritime trade moving and allow ships access to ports.

According to the statement, the global shipping industry plays a key role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the agency's statistics, around 80 percent of global trade is transported by commercial shipping, which move the world's food, energy and raw materials, as well as manufactured goods and components.

This includes vital medical supplies that are badly needed right now, and items that are necessary for the preservation of many manufacturing jobs, without which modern society cannot function, he said.

The text also added that In this time of crisis, it is more important than ever to keep supply chains open and allow maritime trade and cross-border transport to continue..

This means, UNCTAD said, keeping the world's ports open for ship calls and ensuring the movement of ship crews with as few obstacles as possible.

In the face of the current pandemic, the agency estimated that the movement of relief goods, such as food and medical supplies, will increase dramatically.

Therefore, he added, governments should continue to facilitate the movement of not only relief goods but also general items, to minimize the negative impact of the Covid-19 outbreak.
