On Wednesday (11.03.2020) Indec published its International Tourism Statistics report, which reflected a 7,4% year-on-year drop in arrivals in January, while departures plummeted by 19%.
According to the institute, 314.000 non-resident travellers were estimated to arrive in Argentina in the first month of the year. As usual, Ezeiza and Aeroparque accounted for 90,4% of arrivals, with a year-on-year drop of 6,3%.
On the other hand, departures abroad totalled 305.000 resident tourists. Ezeiza and Aeroparque airports also took precedence, with 79,4% of departures, which represented a decrease of 16,2% compared to 2019.
According to INDEC, the number of international tourists was positive (9.000 for all international air routes) for January for the second consecutive month, after 11 months of deficits.
In seasonally adjusted terms, inbound tourism decreased by 3,1% in January compared to December 2019; while the cyclical trend showed an improvement of 0,2%. Meanwhile, the monthly measurement of outbound tourism decreased by 7,2% in January compared to the previous month; and the cyclical trend had a negative variation of 2,3%.
The report highlighted European tourist arrivals, which amounted to 80.400, a figure that represented a year-on-year decrease of 4,6%. Secondly, Brazilian tourist arrivals prevailed, with 75.500 tourists arriving, which decreased by 8,7% year-on-year.
At the other airports (not including Ezeiza and Aeroparque) the influx of inbound tourism registered a decrease of 16,8% compared to the same month of the previous year. The main emitters were: Chile, the “United States and Canada” block, and Brazil.
