USMCA to enter into force on July 1, US government announces

-

The United States Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, notified the US Congress on Friday (24.04.2020/XNUMX/XNUMX) that Canada and Mexico have taken the necessary measures to comply with the commitments established in the trilateral agreement between the United States-Mexico-Canada, T-MEC, and that said agreement will come into force on 1 July 2020.

Following the announcement to Congress, the United States became the third country to notify the other parties that it had completed its internal procedures to implement the agreement, representing the final step necessary for the USMCA to enter into force.

El USMCA contains significant improvements and modernized approaches to the previous Free Trade Agreement negotiations such as in issues of access to agricultural markets, intellectual property, digital commerce, financial services, labor and many other sectors.

U.S. officials said these improvements will create more jobs, provide stronger labor protections, and expand market access, creating new opportunities for American workers, farmers, and ranchers.

"The crisis and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates that now, more than ever, the United States should strive to increase manufacturing capacity and investment in North America. The entry into force of the USMCA is a historic achievement in that effort. Under President Trump’s leadership, we will continue to work to ensure a smooth implementation of the USMCA so that American workers and businesses can enjoy the benefits of the new agreement. "Robert Lighthizer said.

After more than a year of additional consultations with Congress, on December 10, 2019, the United States, Mexico, and Canada signed an amendment protocol to the USMCA that further strengthens compliance with their labor and environmental commitments. Mexico’s Senate ratified the agreement on June 19, 2019, and will need to implement its commitments through changes to its laws and regulations before it can enter into force.
