Withholdings on leather exports suspended

The National Government eliminated for 60 days the tariffs that govern the export of leather, through the Decree 549 / 2020 published this Tuesday (23.06.2020) in the Official Gazette.

The regulation specified that the leather industry was added to the list of activities and services declared essential in the emergency, exempt from compliance with mandatory social isolation and the prohibition of movement.

This includes people assigned to tannery activities and services, with minimum staff, for receiving leather from the refrigeration activity.

In addition, the activity of tanneries was incorporated without restrictions as essential, for the purposes of the emergency and in order to exempt people who perform tasks in the sector from isolation.

The decree highlighted that lThe global health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic has led to a sharp drop in leather export levels, which generated the accumulation of these in the meat industry, with undesirable environmental and health consequences, which put the maintenance of the activity at risk.

"In order to mitigate the impact on production processes and the use of sanitary measures adopted to mitigate the Covid-19 pandemic, it is necessary to temporarily exempt the established export duty," the text of the regulation concludes.

The measure, signed by the President of the Nation, Alberto Fernández; the Chief of Cabinet, Santiago Cafiero; the Ministers of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Luis Basterra; of Economy, Martín Guzmán and of Productive Development, Matías Kulfas, comes into force on Wednesday, June 24, 2020.
