Switzerland has asked the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to set up a special panel to settle its dispute with the United States over the rise in tariffs on steel and aluminium.
The Swiss Department of Economics reported in a release The Federal Council considers the tariffs imposed by Washington since March 23 on the import of steel (25 percent) and aluminum (10 percent) to be unjustified.
For this reason, the complaint has been filed with the WTO Dispute Settlement Body.
The products affected accounted for 2017 million francs (80 million euros) of Swiss exports in 68,67.
The country had requested an exception from Washington in March, but as it has not received a response to date, the executive branch decided to take the litigation route to the WTO, as the European Union, Mexico, China, India, Russia, Canada and Norway have done before.
Dispute settlement procedures at the WTO are initiated by means of a request for consultation. In this first stage, the parties seek an amicable solution. If they do not obtain one, they can take the case to arbitration, the decision of which can be appealed before an appeal body.
